Abstract

This article aims to describe the phonological aspects
used to build humor in Ustadz Abdul Somad's (UAS)
preaching. The data in this study are humorous
speech which contains elements of sound and
meaning play. The technique of playing sound is
determined by referring to the formula for the
phonological aspect of humor formulated by Wijana.
The data were obtained using the observation method
which was supported by the note taking technique.
The data was collected using the Uninvolved
Conversation Observation Technique method. The
data in this research were analyzed using the
referential equivalent method with the comparative
referential technique proposed by Mahsun, namely by
comparing the play of sound and the meaning with the
referent. From the results of data analysis, it was
found that there were seven sound playing techniques
used by UAS to create humorous utterances in his
preaching, namely: sound substitution, sound
permutation, sound insertion, sound addition, sound
impingement, sound preservation, and pause removal.
